Most of the wristwatch buyers and collectors, when being up to buy a new precious timepiece, they already now accurately what to expect from it or what to ask for, which exactly are the “musts-have†of the chosen piece.
In order to evaluate the value of a wristwatch, there are some aspects that should be considered, like the metal construction (between many other important issues).
According to the metal construction, an expensive watch must be constructed from quality materials or inherently valuable. It is not the same a luxury watch that was made from 18k gold than one made from titanium. Metals like gold (in all its colours) as well as platinum (and precious stones) are most commonly used in luxury watches.

The first thing to look related to the precious stones involved is its origin, whather they are natural (obtained through controversial mining methods) or manufactured (which doesn’t mean they are synthetic, but real ones grown in a lab). It is important to verify the quality and amount of them. A few clear ones with good colour are better that a large amount of cheaper ones.

Even though most of the watch companies do not produce their own movements, there are some companies working specifically towards movement supplying, like ETA (a well known watch movement maker, part of Swatch Group). But, high quality timepiece producers design and construct their own ones according to their need and the complexity needed. An example of in-house manufacture made movements could be Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe or Jaeger LeCoultre, among not so many others.
One very important thing to look for in watch is the seal. Its presence certifies that the timepiece satisfies the rigorous rules applied by Swiss law. It absenses does not strictly mean it is not a valuable watch, but if it does, it is for sure a good sign, as it is very hard to get one.

As high end watches are hand made and assembles by master watch makers, it is very important to know how long it took to construct and assemble the timepiece. The watch could have been made by just one watch maker for probably a year or, sometimes, a team is needed so as to fabricate, decorate, assemble and test the unique parts of it. It is not important the fact of being beautiful but complex. A very expensive wristwatch should tell more than just the time. Other common complications like perpetual calendars, rattrapante chronographs, sonneries, fusee and chains, moon phases, and multiple time zones along with world timers, should be included.
