Solar Impulse completes successful Night Flight

OMEGA and Solar Impulse

Omega Sola Impulse

All through the night. When the Solar Impulse prototype airplane touched down at the airfield in Payerne, Switzerland on the morning of July 8th, 2010, it had already made history, having flown all night long powered only by the energy collected in its solar cells the day before. That morning, the sun, which played such a key role, rose on a new era in aviation.

Solar Impulse has an ambitious goal: the project aims to circle the globe powered entirely by solar energy. It will prove convincingly that there are viable sustainable energy sources which will allow us to reduce our dependency on non-renewable fossil fuels.

OMEGA and Solar Impulse

OMEGA is proud of the contributions it has made to this pioneering adventure and congratulates its Solar Impulse partners for this important next step.

OMEGA’s participation has involved capital and technological support. In 2007, the company developed a performance simulation and testing system (test bench) which enabled the SI development team to simulate the airplane’s electrical systems. The project also benefits from the OMEGA instrument, an easy-to-read device which displays important parameters to assist the pilot during landing. It was developed by astronaut and Swatch Group Board Member Claude Nicollier. OMEGA’s engineers have been able to transfer knowledge of hybrid propulsion systems gained through the development of the Swatchmobile in the 1990s.

As a result, the Solar Impulse’s runway is illuminated, the pilot’s safety is enhanced and the promotional lights create an impressive aesthetic effect – all in a package weighing less than two kilograms.

Taylor Lautner at the New York "Eclipse" premiere in New York

One more Piaget Fan

(Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, Twilight co-stars)

Hollywood’s star, Taylor Lautner, arrived at the “Eclipse” premiere in New York wearing a pale grey suit and dark shirt accented with Piaget’s Altiplano 40mm in white gold with a black dial. The Altiplano’s classically refined, yet modern in feel and ultraslim profile made it the perfect choice for Lautner, who has become a new fan of Piaget.

Looking every bit the leading man, Lautner waved to the hundreds of fans who had gathered outside the Crosby Hotel to catch a glimpse of the movie star before joining co-star Kristen Stewart on the red carpet where the two posed for photographers. The Piaget-sponsored premiere of the summer’s most highly anticipated film drew a number of celebrities and high profile New Yorkers, including Abigail Breslin, Cheyenne Jackson, Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas, stylist Rachel Zoe, models Hilary Rhoda, Carol Alt and Dree Hemingway, Kelly Kilorean Bensimon, Lauren Bush and designers Rachel Roy, Cynthia Rowley and Georgina Chapman.

(Larry Boland, President of Piaget North America, and Taylor Lautner wearing Piaget luxury watches)

Also in attendance was Nic Roldan, Piaget’s polo ambassador who was in town for the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic where he captained Prince Harry’s team. Roldan wore the special limited edition version of the Piaget Polo FortyFive that Piaget created for the event.

Following the screening, Piaget hosted an intimate after-party in the Crosby Hotel’s private lounge.

Breitling Chronospace

The new instrument for pilots

Sturdy, efficient, accurate: Breitling has created a new multifunction wrist instrument that will find its place in all cockpits – and is distinguished both on the ground and in the air by its innovative design featuring a star-shaped bezel.

In 125 years, Breitling has launched a number of stellar models intended for pilots, including the famous Navitimer with its circular slide rule capable of handling all the essential calculations relating to airborne navigation. Today, the privileged partner of aviation is pursuing this tradition with a new model that draws upon the full potential of cutting-edge electronics. Designed for intensive professional use, the Chronospace boasts an impressive array of functions that are useful to pilots – 1/100th of a second chronograph with split times, alarm, countdown, dual timezone display with independent alarm, 24-hour military time, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), perpetual calendar – all powered by a chronometer-certified Breitling SuperQuartzTM movement that is ten times more accurate than an ordinary quartz caliber. The large dial is distinguished by its oversized hands, along with luminescent hour-markers and large 3 and 9 o’clock numerals. To guarantee optimal readability by day and night, the LCD screens are equipped with a high-performance NVG-compatible backlighting system. The double caseback is designed to amplify sound signals up to a level of 90 decibels. The circular rack-and-pinion mounted slide rule is easily and accurately rotated using the star-shaped bezel – an original and extremely ergonomic design. The Chronospace is available on various wristbands, including a new bracelet in satin-brushed woven steel with a little vintage touch, and a sporty looking perforated rubber strap. An exceptional instrument for exceptional feats.

New ladies' timepieces for 2010

Hamilton is in touch with its feminine side

Hamilton has always known what women want. Already in 1908, the American brand introduced its first wristwatches in response to the fact that female fashion of the era did not embrace waistcoats with pockets suitable for carrying watches. Hamilton has remained closely in touch with its feminine side ever since - and equally true to its rejection of the rumor that ladies like to be "fashionably late". Its contemporary ladies' timepieces combine beauty and reliability without a trace of contradiction, harmoniously morphing yesterday into today.
