Glashütte Original and Baselworld 2011

Luxury Watches World

Hot on the heels of its successful first participation to the Berlinale, Glashütte Original brought to its Baselworld 2011 stand some Berlin flavours.

The entrance area was reworked to accommodate a comfortable lounge ambience, reminiscent of the Brand’s activities during the Film Festival.

Visitors had the possibility to interact with the Brand’s values, history and collection thanks to the presence of the innovative “Interactive Brand Experience”.

Seamlessly integrated in the lounge’s table, a touchpad allowed the user to take control of the screen right in front to visualize the whole collection as well as videos from the Manufactory and in-depth explanations of some of the most technical products of Glashütte Original.

The feel of the communication material was in line with the key novelty of the year, the Seventies Panorama Date, a distinctly “vintage” feel marrying Glashütte Original’s engineering prowess with an elegant, sophisticated look.

Visitors to the booth were numerous, among them rockstar and avid watch collector Eric Singer, drummer with legendary rock band Kiss.

Eric owns several Glashütte Original models and is always curious to find out about the Brand’s innovations at the earliest possible occasion.

Because culture is our passion Glashütte Original events in cooperation with Dresdner Musikfestspiel

As an established watch manufactory, it is very important for Glashütte Original to promote and preserve our cultural heritage for the coming generations.

The maintenance of craftsmanship and the highest standards also entails building bridges between the mastery of the art of watchmaking and the fine arts.

Just as classical melodies delight music lovers, transcending generations and borders, the  masterpieces of Glashütte watchmaking have been delighting watch lovers from all over the world for more than 165 years.

Watchmakers and artists have always put great passion and devotion into the creation of their masterpieces. Just as the interplay of the wheels, pinions and springs in a mechanical timepiece ensures its movement and precision, the interplay of pitch, rhythm, and instrumentation creates an overall harmonious composition in music.

Glashütte Original Music Festival Award 2011

Sir Simon Rattle and Berlin Philharmonics honored at the Dresden Semper Opera

gLASHUTE ORIGINAL MUSIC fESTIVAL AWARD

The Dresden Music Festival and the watch manufactory Glashütte Original honored on Friday, 3rd of June this year’s winners of the Glashütte Original MusicFestivalAward.

The prize, worth 25,000 Euro, was awarded to the Berlin Philharmonic and its chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle. Prior to the concert Martin Hoffmann, General Manager of the Berlin Philharmoniker Foundation, took reception of the award.

After the award ceremony the famous ensemble, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, could be heard at the Semper Opera with Gustav Mahler’s Sixth Symphony.

Since 2002 Sir Simon Rattle has been Artistic Director of the Berliner Philharmonie and Principal Conductor of the Philharmonic. He has already enjoyed a long collaboration with the orchestra that is not only characterized by numerous award-winning recordings but also by new ways to make music accessible to young people of a different social and cultural background.

Very important is the education-program Zukunft@BPhil. For his commitment, Sir Simon Rattle received, among others, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Sir Simon Rattle is one of the most versatile artists of today. As concert and opera conductor he performs a repertoire that ranges from Baroque to Contemporary Music.

In 2004, the Glashütte Original MusicFestivalAward was created by the Dresden Music Festival and Glashütte Original. This prize honors the lifetime achievements of artists who have dedicated themselves to the creative arts and have made these the subject of continuous development. Former prize winners include the conductor Kurt Masur, the choreographer John Neumeier, the opera director Joachim Herz, the violinist Gidon Kremer and the mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig.

With the awarding of the prize in 2009 to the conductor Gustavo Dudamel, the prize took on a new dimension. With the Venezuelan conductor Dudamel, it was the first time that the prize went to an artist who had made a significant contribution to the promotion of young up-and coming talent.

The same is valid for Valery Gergiev, Director and General Manager of the renowned Mariinsky Theatre, who was awarded the prize in 2010. The prize money supports the promotion of these young artists, completely in accord with the intention of the award.

As in the past years, two apprentices from the Alfred Helwig School of Watchmaking undertook the construction of the Glashütte Original MusicFestivalAward.

The school, which is part of the Glashütte Original watch manufactory, trains twelve watchmakers and three toolmakers each year. The prize’s design combines traditional watchmaking craftsmanship with modern materials.

The Flying Tourbillon, with its 18 tiny weight screws, symbolises the virtuosity of the watchmakers. It is regarded as a sign of the highest levels of the art of watchmaking and was developed in Glashütte in 1920 by Alfred Helwig.

For 165 years, the name Glashutte has been a synonym for high-quality watchmaking, German accuracy, and superb design as, from the smallest screw to the most complicated watch movement, timepieces by Glashutte Original are manufactured in the highest degree of production depth, with a great deal of the work done by hand.

On March 2010, several representatives from the watchmaking industry gathered in the Hotel Plaza in Basle to participate in the announcement of the winners of the “Watch of the Year 2010”.

A total of 159 timepieces were nominated in the category of men’s watches. The votes could be submitted either by postcard or online.
