IWC Schaffhausen honours Jacques Yves Cousteau on his 100th birthday

IWC Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Jacques-Yves Cousteau Ref. IW376706

11 June 2010 marks the 100th birthday of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the man that like no other individual in the 20th century has promoted and influenced research of the world’s oceans.

Swiss watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen, partner and sponsor of the Cousteau Society for many years, is proud to dedicate a fifth special edition to “Le Commandant” on this historic anniversary: the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

The watch is water resistant to 1,200 meters and features an impressive interchangeable strap system that makes removing and replacing the strap very easy – without any tools required. Inside the watch is an IWC automatic chronograph movement. While the piece isn’t a limited edition per se, IWC classifies it as a “special edition”, what means that very few will be made, but without a specific number.

IWC 2009 Collection: The Little Prince

a tribute to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

The Little Prince (French: Le Petit Prince), published in 1943, is French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's most famous novel. Saint-Exupéry wrote it while living in the United States. It has been translated into more than 180 languages and sold more than 80 million copies making it one of the best-selling books ever.

An earlier memoir by the author recounts his aviation experiences in the Saharan desert. He is thought to have drawn on these same experiences for use as plot elements in The Little Prince. Saint-Exupéry's novel has been adapted to various media over the decades, including stage, screen and operatic works.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and The Little Prince

There is The Museum of The Little Prince in Hakone, featuring outdoor squares and sculptures like The B 612 Asteroid, The Lamplighter Square, the sculpture of the little prince. There is a large Little Prince Park, The Consuelo Rose Garden. But the main part of the museum is the indoor exhibition. Before France adopted the Euro as its currency, Saint-Exupéry and the little prince were on the French 50 Franc banknote; the artwork was by Swiss designer Roger Pfund. One of the anticounterfeiting measures on the banknote was micro-printed text from Le Petit Prince, visible with a strong magnifying glass.

In 2006, IWC honoured the early pilots with a limited edition of chronograph watches dedicated to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, well known pilot and author of one of the most famous novel of all times: The Little Prince.

In 2009 the fourth and final series of watches dedicated to Saint-Exupéry was launched. It is a Big Pilot’s model, made in a limited edition of 1.900 timepieces
