Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Who could embody Longines' motto "Elegance is an attitude" better than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan? It therefore should come as no surprise that the Indian beauty has been an ambassador for the Swiss brand for more than 10 years.
Considered by many as one of the most beautiful women in the world, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was born in Mangalore (India) on 1 November 1973. Being a natural beauty she began modelling whilst studying architecture, as recommended by her professor. In the light of her phenomenal success she become a professional model and was simultaneously approached by many in the Indian film industry (mostly Bollywood ), but instead participated in Miss India and subsequently won the title and represented India to win the Miss World 94-95 title. Unable to lead a regular student life from her new celebrity status, she decided to accept the numerous film offers from the Indian film industry and began her career as an actor in 1996, achieving great success, breaking convention, winning several accolades and awards (including a couple of prestigious awards, equivalent to an Oscar) and top honours throughout her career till date.
In 2002 she starred in Devdas, one of the most ambitious and internationally impactful films in Bollywood's history, which triumphed at the Cannes Film Festival. Following this, Aishwarya gained international fame and became the first Indian to be asked to join the festival jury the following year. Hollywood couldn’t resist and her first film in English, Bride and Prejudice, was released in 2004 and soon other International productions followed. Aishwarya Rai has also been a front-runner for the country. A call from the soldiers of her country made her the first Indian woman to scale the inhospitable terrain of Siachen. Aishwarya Rai’s global reach and talent saw the first Indian female actor to work in a mainstream Hollywood cinema. It was the first step to many more films to follow. In 2008, Forbes ranked her the highest earning celebrity from India. This was the first instance that an Indian actress was featured on the prestigious list. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was a brand name with huge global value, so there was no surprise when she was the first Indian to appear on the Late Show with David Letterman, and was the first Bollywood personality to appear on Oprah’s Women across the globe segment. In addition to these achievements, Aishwarya was recently awarded the Padmashree, which is given by the Indian Government as a recognition for her outstanding contribution in the field of arts and culture. She was also presented with the French honour.
Although blessed with talents Aishwarya has never forgotten the less fortunate ones and she set up a charitable foundation Aishwarya Rai Foundation, in order to help those in need. In spring 2007 Aishwarya got married to Abhishek Bachchan, who is the son of legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan and the former actress Jaya Bachchan, a family regarded as one of the most prestigious and respected families in the Indian Film Industry.
