Rolex Watches
A story of technique.
At the very beginning of the XX century, the pocket watch was the masculine timekeeper as the wristwatches were considered to be for ladies.
Some time after Cartier surprised the world with the revolutionary Santos, Hans Wildorf, together with Alfred Davis, bet on wristwatches and started developing smaller mechanisms for them.
In july, 1908 Wilsdorf registered, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, a new brand called Rolex Co. SA de Aegler. He chose Rolex as the brand’s name because it was pronounced the same way in most of the languages.
Since the very beginning, Rolex worked hard in order to get the most reliable wristwatches. That’s why, in 1910, Rolex asked for the COSC certificate. In 1926, Rolex created the first watch submersible, the Oyster. English swimmer, Mercedes Gleitze, swam across the Ensglish Channel wearing the Rolex Oyster. The adventure certified Rolex’s first heroic mechanical deed.
