The Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative

2012/2013 New Mentors Announced

Following a weekend of celebration and international gathering in New York City for this last year partnership of Mentors and Proteges participating in the Rolex Arts Initiative program, the 2012/2013 Mentors were announced.

Some of the world’s greatest artists will gather in New York City in November to celebrate the culmination of their year of creative exchange with emerging talents in their fields. Six major artists – Trisha Brown, Brian Eno, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Anish Kapoor, Peters Sellars and Zhang Yimou – were paired with six young talents by the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative for a year of dialogue and artistic collaboration.

As apart of a night hosted by Bertrand Gros, Chairman of the board of Rirectors of Rolex SA, and also held at New York City’s Lincoln Center, the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative has announced the names of the six internationally recognized master artists who will serve as mentors in dance, film, literature, music, theatre and visual arts in 2012-2013.

The mentors are: Canadian author Margaret Atwood, French theatre director Patrice Chéreau, Brazilian singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil, South African visual artist William Kentridge, Taiwanese choreographer Lin Hwai-min and American film editor and sound designer Walter Murch. And the Rolex Arts Initiative has already begun a worldwide search to find the new protégés.

The protégés will be announced in mid-2012 and the mentoring year will begin soon afterwards. As part of the program, each protégé receives $25,000 to support his or her participation in the programme. At the conclusion of the mentoring year, each protégé is eligible for an additional $25,000 for the creation of a new work.

Tiger Woods to be new Rolex Ambassador.

Golfer is back in the game

tiger woods and rolex

After two years since his last endorsement and after losing several contracts, Tiger Woods announced earlier this month a new partnership with the titan of all brands, Rolex.    The terms of the deal have not been disclosed but it is believed that we are looking at a 5-year contract between the watch brand and the once top of the world golf player.

The golf start has recently lost a sponsorship deal with Tag Heuer after a much unhappy remark on his part. His very public personal life scandals, including been involved in serial adultery which led to his divorced, has cost the sport star five major endorsements in the past two years.

Along with the Rolex contract, Woods has also announced his return to the PGA Tour. The Rolex deal is one major break to follow his deal with a Japanese company earlier this year. In the past two years, Tiger Woods lost endorsement deals with AT&T, Accenture, Tag Heuer, Gatorade, and Gillete.

This newly announced partnership will be the second time Woods and Rolex would be doing business together: when Tiger Woods first turned pro, he had an endorsement deal with Tudor. This time Rolex will be supporting Woods for longer and have stated they believe that Woods still has a long career ahead of him.

The romance between Rolex and Celebrities

102 years of passion

Rolex Celebrities

Notable characters have been wearing Rolex watches along history. But, not only art celebrities are chosen by Rolex as their ambassador, during the lasts decades, many people related to adventure and sports were selected to be the face of remarkable models that satisfied their needs for adventure or extreme sports, while Rolex supported their activity.

Even though the worldwide crisis affected Switzerland as well, growing countries like China and India are helping Rolex Industry to face adversity and Jean-Noel Bioul, Rolex International Sponsorship director, said that the Group was still doing fine in Europe and North America.

Remarkable artists like Eric Clapton or actor Daniel Craig invested on the last Milgauss watch that, with a weight of 157 grams, can work perfectly well even during thermonuclear incidents that could release up to 1.000 gauss in magnetic fields.

During those 102 years of history, many celebrities gave that special mystic to Rolex watches. Ernesto Che Guevara went to Cuba wearing a GMT Master, Picasso was pictured wearing a red hairband in his head and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Chonometer in his wrist. Owners have a strategic role in Rolex Philosophy Pillars which are called "Testimonies". Among them, we can find tennis player Roger Federer or the tenor Plácido Domingo. There are chosen for being related to the brand’s dignity and passion and for being in love with the piece they represent.
